IGTV Hashtags – How to Get More People Watching Your Videos


With IGTV being a relatively new platform, if you’re creating high-quality content that’s appealing to your audience, using hashtags on your IGTV video descriptions is a great way to get more people to find you and your content.

There are two key aspects of a good hashtag strategy for IGTV that we will cover in this article as well as how rankings are determined for hashtags search results for IGTV videos. And be sure to stick around to the end for the bonus where I will tell you what you can do to get more reach and exposure on your IGTV videos beyond just the hashtags. You’re going to use a strategy very similar to what you would use on your Instagram feed post. This is going to be a combination of three types of hashtags; popular, moderately popular, and niche-specific hashtags. We went into more detail on this very specific super-secret recipe in the article for hashtags for Instagram feed posts. You can use up to 30 hashtags just as you would on a feed post. Again, this is kind of a use it or lose it mentality. The more you use, the more chances you have for search, and I’m not a gambler, but I’m willing to take the chance of getting more views off of more hashtags than less hashtags. When it comes to showing up in the hashtag search results, feed post takes up a single square. IGTV videos are a full vertical video giving you more real estate for people to watch and see your content. There’s no guarantee that your IGTV video will appear in that search result. However, if you have a high-performing post that’s doing well with your audience and its ideal content for your target audience, it’s got a better chance of being algorithmically sorted for that target audience to view it.

So where do you put your hashtags on an IGTV video? The upload process is relatively simple for IGTV. You’re going to go ahead and open the IGTV app, hit the plus sign, and that’s going to allow you to select a video to upload. Once you’ve done that and chosen your cover image, you get to the next screen, and that is going to be where you enter your title and your description. You do need to give a title to your video or it will not upload. The description is actually optional, but this is where all of the goodies go in. This is where you get to explain what’s happening in the video. This is where you going to add a clickable URL for anybody, doesn’t have any restrictions on account size limits, and this is where you’re going to put all of your hashtags, so there’s no subsequent comments or anything else. You’re putting all of those hashtags directly in that description of the IGTV video and then, you’re going to go ahead and hit Publish. So, we’ve already talked about the fact that IGTV is a relatively new feature and not a lot of people will go over to IGTV to watch a video.

So, here’s your bonus. When you upload a video that’s over one minute in length to IGTV, you have the option to share a one-minute preview to your regular Instagram feed. By doing this, it actually shows up in the feed of those people who are following you and it lives on your profile as a regular post. When anybody sees that video, they get a little prompt at the bottom. They can watch the full video on IGTV. If they watch the full one-minute preview, they get another prompt to watch the rests of the video on IGTV, sending people over there to get you more views, and hopefully, more conversions. But in addition to that, because the post is living on your profile and in the feed of your followers, with the full description that you’ve already uploaded for that IGTV video, it’s more encouraging for people to have dialog and conversation on your content, driving better results for your reach and engagement across Instagram.
